BLOG POST 9: Definition of Genre

Before in the first few weeks of english composition 1001 I’d define genre as a “type”. I still think that’s a pretty good way to define genre, but now that I’ve written and composed in so many different contexts, I’ve realized that genre is more complicated than just a “type”. Genres are different ways of expressing information. Depending on the target audience the genre can contain the same information but displayed in a different way. If your target audience enjoy visual information or have a low interest in reading the information, a video can be composed to educate them and to get your point across. If your audience is more interested in the same facts and information neatly written in blocks and paragraphs then the genre of your work would change even though it would contain the same information. So, Genre is not just a “type”, its a more complex medium of communication that is very much required for educating.

BLOG POST 8: Purpose and Primary Research

Every piece of writing must have a reason for being written. Context without purpose has no relevance and no true meaning. Purpose is why the discourse is created. With the purpose there is usually some goal that is required to be achieved. For an article in the newspaper reviewing a restaurant, the purpose of the article is to rate how good the restaurant was on their own scale that their audience is accustomed to, the goal however of the article would probably be to educate their audience on the restaurants and what to try or what to avoid. The goal of the writing can be assumed from the purpose of the discourse.

Primary research is the firsthand information gathered. Its not from an already gathered source of information. By gathering your own information you have more responsibility than just citing sources of information, you become more liable for the truth and how genuine it is. Primary research can be interviews, experiences or anything where you can learn something interesting to you.

BLOG POST 5: Reflection

Reflection is important, it’s the only way to determine whether anything has actually been understood from what has been read. Reflection plays a critical role in the process of learning. It lets us learn more about the way we learn by taking off time to look back and review the way we understood and how we can change our own methods to better ourselves and our capabilities. It allows us to think about the other ways we can go about the same tasks. When we test different theories we get different results/outcomes. These different outcomes will vary in their success rates or proficiencies and only by reflection can we find the best way to succeed/ be more efficient.

Major Assignment 3 activity 4

  • what barriers did I face trying to educate my audience

yoga is a very traditional exercise and its been around for so long, that it must have a lot of terminologies and history or backstory that requires a strong foundation to understand. Without knowing the basics its difficult to go in depth on the topic. I can’t dive right into what yoga groups are or how to join them without understanding them completely myself. Yoga in India not only requires a degree in practice but you must also possess a degree in its philosophy. Its more complicated and difficult than it appears online and in the media and all its glamour.

  • how different was the composing from the essay writing?

I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment. I don’t like essay writing, I’m more of a creative and pictorial person, so creating the infographic was interesting and I’m very proud of my third assignment .

  • why did I choose the genres that I used

I feel that younger people are very influential, with the uprising of social media and “need for clout”. If models and famous personalities can get paid for just posting pictures of them sponsoring thing online I’m sure that their genuine opinions in articles or interviews is also worthy of influencing. SO, firstly I will read a few entertainment articles where a few of my favorite famous personalities have raving reviews and comments on the benefits of doing yoga and how and why they practice it. Secondly, Instagram has truly taken over almost ever millennials social life and creating an Instagram page with posts containing information on the exercise with very vivid and colorful pictures will definitely peak the audiences interest as all infographics do. Thirdly, I will also find the most suitable yoga gurus’ interview on how beneficial doing yoga is and paste the url link to download it and watch and understand how an expert explains it. We all tend to believe an experts words over any normal persons, so I’m assuming that will be a good genre to use to “persuade”

  • what rhetorical parts of speech did I use?

I played on the emotional and influential aspects of humans. Seeing something that is colorful and neatly created make people more keen on trying whatever it is that’s displayed. I also tried to impress people with the opinions of famous personalities.

  • my discourse community was not affected majorly in any way

Lesson Plan

STEP 1: FAMILIARIZE In terms of Context, by making the material given more familiar or similar to what is known to you, the process of learning becomes more personal and is easier to understand. Identify the parts of the text that you can relate and try to understand it from a more personal point of view. (10mins)

STEP 2: WRITE IT DOWN When you use more senses you tend to put in more effort, so by just reading a text you’re applying only your sight and hearing, but when you’re writing or drawing out what you’ve understood you use four senses. This makes it more likely you’ll remember what you learnt. SO, write out the important key words or points that struck you while reading the material. (15mins)

STEP 3: CLARIFY ANY DOUBTS/REVISE Reread the parts you haven’t understood or ask someone that knows the material better. ALWAYS make sure you know the entire concept and not bits and pieces of it. Half information is worse than not knowing anything at all, because the knowledge based off of the false facts will also be false. SO, don’t learn the wrong things and revise what you’ve learnt no matter how little or how much it is.(10mins)

STEP 4: APPLICATION Apply the knowledge you spent all class trying to learn. This is a sort of positive reinforcement that will motivate you to remember what you studied.(15mins)

STEP 5: REFLECTION Take a break once you’ve reached your saturartion point or when you feel you can’t read and understand any more, and reflect on what you’ve learnt.(5mins)

My Key Word(In Class Reflection)

Purpose is the word I’ve chosen as my “key word”. Purpose is the reason that any piece of writing is composed. No context or written work is ever composed aimlessly or for no reason at all. Every single discourse has a purpose, either to educate, argue or achieve. The goal of any discourse could be to achieve their purpose or to spread awareness. Without purpose the writing has no reason to exist. Debates have a purpose, that is to argue on which party has a better purpose. Advertisements have their purpose to publicize and promote their products or services which have their own products that have their own purposes that customers have their own readers to use. Based on the purpose of the context the targeted audience can use the information best and appropriately.

Pre discussion work

Bazzermans text was rather complex and for a simpleton like me it took quite some time to understand the pretty straightforward meanings he tried to convey.

I read Bazzermans text early in the morning after I had something to eat so I wouldn’t have anything else to think about and could completely focus and concentrate on the text, I wrote a few basic sentences and bullet points about the highlighted topics so it would help me understand better.

My response to Bazzermans text : It helped me realize how a lot of the situations in real life can not be as easily portrayed through written words as we may think. Genres are like patterns that are easily identifiable by certain expected responses.

Genres cannot always be identified by the same characteristics or features and they
